Hotel Tips
The biggest and most important tip to make your stay easy is related to food and dining. Since the hotel is isolated, there are no nearby supermarkets that you can instantly access. Bring snacks, wine or any particular drinks that you might want during your stay! Yes- the hotel does offer room service-and has a restaurant-but having your own supplies means being able to fully enjoy waiting for service in isolation:) If dinner plans take place down in Guatape town remember/know finding a tuk-tuk back late at night becomes harder/more expensive so set pickup time w/driver earlier.
Also, prep for the climate. Guatape is at a respectable altitude and while days can be warm and sunny, nights get surprisingly cool, especially by the water. The chalets are designed to be airy which is great for the day but you will want warm pajamas and a sweater for the evenings when you are sitting on the deck. Do not assume it is tropical heat 24/7; more like an eternal spring that leans towards chilly after sunset.
You will most likely communicate with the staff via WhatsApp because that is how Colombians communicate. Make sure you save their number and have data on your phone. This is how you order breakfast, ask for room cleaning, or request them to call a “motochiva”(one of the local colorful tuk-tuks) for you. On your first trip out, establish a relationship with one specific tuk-tuk driver; get his WhatsApp number so that later on he can be messaged directly for pickups since Uber does not exist or work reliably in this rural area.
